Michelle McNicholas.

Michelle McNicholas is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin. She completed her radiology training at St Vincent’s University hospital before undertaking a two-year fellowship in Abdominal Imaging and Intervention at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She then joined the Staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital remaining there for three years, during that time also teaching and attaining the academic position of Assistant Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School. She was appointed consultant radiologist at the Mater University Hospital Dublin taking up that position in 2000, and is also Clinical Associate Professor of Radiology at UCD.

She had a particular interest in prostate imaging and intervention, and has worked with her radiation oncology colleagues at Mater Private for over 20 years, delivering prostate brachytherapy. She performed the first prostate SpaceOAR placement in Europe, and together with colleague Daragh Murphy have performed over 1000 cases, more than any other European centre.

She helped set up transperineal prostate biopsy at the Mater Campus, which has transformed the morbidity associated with prostate biopsy. She is involved in teaching at the Faculty of Radiologists RCSI, has published and supervised several research papers and is currently publishing the fourth edition of her textbook ‘Anatomy for Diagnostic Imaging’.
