Prof Alan McNeill

Professor Alan McNeill FRCS(Urol), FRCP(Ed), FFSTEd has been an NHS Consultant at NHS Lothian University Hospitals in Edinburgh for 24 years. He holds honorary Professor posts at both the University of Edinburgh and Heriot Watt University.
Alan’s primary clinical interest is diseases of the prostate – he published the original research work demonstrating the advantage of prescribing alpha-blocker prior to a trial without catheter following acute urinary retention and remains active in several research projects.
Following training in Leipzig and The Cleveland Clinic he led the introduction of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy to Scotland in 2006 followed by the introduction of RARP in 2015. He continues to undertake a high-volume practice in RP and is actively involved in training Fellows.
Alan is currently the Chair of the Board of Trustees for the BJUI, which oversees BJUI, BJUI Compass and BJUI Knowledge. He is a Founding Trustee of Prostate Scotland, Chair of the Urology Group for the Southeast of Scotland Cancer Network (SCAN) and has held many positions over the years, which include – Training Programme Director East of Scotland, Lead Clinician for Urology NHSL, Secretary and Chairman of the BAUS Section of Oncology, Chair of the Urology Surgical Specialty Board RCSEd, Reviewer and member of the BJUI Editorial Board.
Interests outside work include family, friends, field sports and a little golf.
